Karen has worked in both the for-profit and non-profit sectors of the real estate industry, first as a senior analyst for an institutional equity/lender, moving from there into commercial real estate banking as a Senior Vice President and Senior Credit Officer for a major bank.  After 10 years in the corporate world, she made an intentional shift to non-profit community development in order to apply her real estate finance and asset management skills to the alleviation of urban blight and the creation of housing opportunities for underserved residents of Dallas County.

She served as President of Dallas City Homes (DCH), a private non-profit community development organization specializing in affordable housing, for 21 years. The company developed single family, multifamily and mixed-use projects both ground-up construction and renovations.

In 2021 Karen retired from DCH and received an Honorable Mention for the Juanita Craft Humanitarian Award in the Legacy category.  In 2023 she launched Mae B. Real Estate Development (Mae B. RED) to tackle on-going social and economic challenges that are reflected in the built environment and diminish a community's sense of purpose and place.  Karen is a Michigan State University graduate with a B.S. degree in Zoology.
